Tongue vs language

Postby GRD » 19 Jan 2024, 23:44

Gen 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
Gen 11:1 AND the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
.............
Many tongues, yet one language; is this in reference to one language with many dialects?
I'm not sure what the difference is.
Thanks

This is the most literal interpretation. A language can have many dialects, which are regional variations of the same language that differ in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
For example, American English and British English are dialects of the same language (English). They are mutually intelligible, but there are some differences in pronunciation, spelling, and grammar.
